Yared Nuguse is of Ethiopian heritage. His parents are Alem Nuguse and Mana Berhe. As per the Courier-Journal, his parents own a liquor store in Louisville.
He has five siblings including two younger twin siblings.
Personal Life
Nuguse was initially more interested in education compared to sports. However, he began running after a suggestion from his PE teacher. He graduated high school from DuPont Manual High School.
After this, he attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated with a BS in 2021. He then finished his MS in Management from the same university. As a student-athlete, he represented Notre Dame Fighting Irish in cross country and track & field events.
Career
Yared Nuguse began appearing in running competitions in 2017. In 2018, he won the 3000m race at the Notre Dame Invitational. That year, he also won the South Bend Meyo Invitational and Blooming USA U20 Championships.
Upon enrolling at the University of Notre Dame, he was placed third in a 1500m race at the ACC Outdoor Championships as a freshman. He was named as the 2019 ACC Track Performer of the Year and became the 2020 ACC Champion in the mile and distance medley relay events.
He consistently performed at the US Olympic Trials and made his Olympic debut in the 2020 Tokyo but was DNS. After finishing master’s in 2022, he joined On Athletics Club to take running seriously.
In 2023, he won the 1500m event at the World Indoor Tour in Madrid and placed first in the 1500m race at the USA Championships. At the 2023 World Athletics Championships, he came fifth.
Earlier in 2024, he came second in the 300m short track at the World Athletics Indoor Championships. He qualified for the 2024 Paris after securing 2nd position at the US Olympic Trials. He won bronze in the 1500m race at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
